After a long blogging hiatus, The Healthy Hangover is back. To celebrate a return to blogging we’ve put together a fun treat for you all with Foxy Bingo. We provided our friends over at Foxy with the food hacks section of their new random life tip generator. Great examples of the food hacks included within the article would be genius uses for grapes, healthy alternatives to ice cream and the lesser known secret technique to find out if your avocado really is ripe (And avoid being thrown out of the supermarket for over-eager avocado fondling)

Here’s an example of the food hacks below, delivered in Foxy’s classic northern dialect:

But it’s not just food hacks, the random life tip generator can also generate life, love and other domestic tips so you’ll be living a better happier life in no time. This life hack generator was created in conjunction with their rebrand wherein Heather Graham has been revealed as the new face of their business meaning there are lots of new exciting announcements from the brand going ahead. Alongside the content for the food hacks generator, I also wrote a summary of where the spice cinnamon comes from, the benefits and negatives of eating it.

So if you’re ready to learn all about Cinnamon and learn some sweet life hacks head over to Foxy’s random life tip generator by clicking here.

Subscription boxes seem to be all the rage these days. Often these are poorly thought out entrepreneurial endeavours that fall flat on their faces as they severely underestimate the demand for a product to be delivered on a recurring basis.

This doesn’t seem to be the case (excuse the pun) for Flavourly, whose craft beer delivery box received and turned down 4 offers on Dragons Den!

Since then they’ve gone from strength to strength and I was given the opportunity to try one of their boxes this weekend. In my spare time I like to brew beer kits – I’m not a novice to beer but I’m certainly not a pro either.

The first thing that will strike you when opening the Flavourly box is the sheer quality of everything involved, the design on the exterior of the box is tasteful yet playful and is similar to the style of design on most craft beer labels.

Upon opening the material within the box was very informative, describing the subtleties of each beer. But the spotlight isn’t just on the beer, it also describes the brewer and where it was brewed. I was given a mixed beer box, so I had a delicious mix between light and dark beers.

Here’s what the full contents of the box looked like. It’s a huge amount of things for £20! (Even less if you sign up on a long term monthly package and use the Flavourly voucher code at the bottom of this page) The level of detail to this delivery box would make it perfect for a craft beer veteran or someone just getting into it.

The addition of a glass and bottle opener were great! They really took the box to the next level for me and I expect both to get a great deal of use over the summer.

What goes with craft beer? Craft snacks. Flavourly truly have thought of everything within this box, the snacks included with the box were interesting and not the usual packet of peanuts you’d find with a pint of Carling.

What I loved about it

The attention to detail was amazing and the sheer volume of information regarding the beer was spot on. I also developed a real soft spot for one of the beers within the box. The tickety brew rose wheat beer above is brewed in Manchester and definitely one to try if you want to try something a bit different.

It also cuts out the guesswork of figuring out which type of craft beers you like, so no more supping on experimental pints in pubs and hating what you’ve bought. For me it firmly concreted that I favour light beers.

The delivery time was also excellent, it was sent out on Wednesday and arrived on Friday of the same week. Just in time for a barbecue on the Saturday!

What I didn’t like

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t dig the snacks. I’m not much of a fan of cheddar crisps in general and the nut kernels were a little bit weird. But these are subjective opinions based on taste and the snacks won’t stay the same with each box.

Would I buy this box?

In an instant, Flavourly is the way forward for craft beer! You can also give it as a gift to someone… I know what any of my friend’s will be getting for their birthdays…

HOW DO I GET MY HANDS ON A BOX + FLAVOURLY VOUCHER CODE?

Head over to Flavourly Craft Beer Club and when asked for a Flavourly voucher code enter James12, this will get you £12 off your first box!

Disclaimer: I was given a box to review by Flavourly, all opinions in regards to this product are unbiased and were not skewed by being given a box for free.

I’m always one for a culinary challenge, this recipe was It’s part of the MyVoucherCodes / The Hunger Project “Come dine below the line” campaign. In return for a £40 donation to the The Hunger project I was tasked with the creation of a recipe that is below 33p a head!

Check this video out for more information on ‘Come dine below the line’

If you’re interested in holding your own budget dinner party, sign up here and get your fundraising boots on!

The challenge within this campaign as mentioned is that the recipe has to be below 33p a head. The price allowance is dependent on the number of people. So, for example, if you were cooking for two, you’d have a budget of 66p, if you were cooking for 10, you’d have a budget of £3.30. This recipe was created with 4 people in mind – so my overall budget was £1:32.

Initially I was left scratching my head, but a visit to Asda gave me a burst of inspiration. I found my muse within the dairy aisle, it didn’t have fanciest packaging but you should never judge a book by it’s cover;

The name almost sounds comical. ‘Greek style salad cheese’ is only 75p! With that in mind I got to think about preparation methods and decided to bake it in with chilli to help this budget block of dairy reach it’s full potential.

You’ll need something to bake the chilli in for this recipe I used parchment paper as it was the only thing I had to hand – for this you could also use foil (I’m sure you have either knocking around the house, if not you could bake it in a casserole dish or a pan with a lid.

The first food shop at university can be quite daunting, with no parents around to govern what you eat it can be quite difficult to save money and stay healthy. But don’t fret, it’s easy when you keep these tips in mind.

Student Food Shopping Tips

Budget & plan accordingly

Before undertaking your weekly food shop sit down and figure out your budget and what you’re going to be eating for the rest of the week. Research recipes that use the same ingredients to cut down on food waste, it’s not the most romantic of eating but it will stand to save you a lot of money.

The meal planner template above can be downloaded here, print it off and stick it to your fridge! It’s a great idea to pick recipes that can be made in bulk and frozen for busy midweek evenings.

Performing an on line groceries shop is also the perfect way to organise your shop, it’s convenient and if you combine your shop with a house-mate you can cut the delivery charge by half. Also be sure to have a quick look for any discount codes you could use before you place your order online, a couple of place you should look are My Voucher Codes and Money Saving Expert

Frozen food is your friend

Don’t shy away from the frozen aisle, frozen meat (such as chicken breast) and frozen vegetables are often dramatically cheaper when frozen. Currently you can get a kilo of frozen chicken breasts from Asda for under £4, a lot cheaper than it’s fresh counterpart.

No brand, no problem

Are you a brand snob? Do you find yourself buying branded versions of store cupboard basics? If you’re spending over 30p for a tin of chopped tomatoes you’re definitely getting mugged off. It might not seem like a lot of money but over time these little costs can add up.

As a rule of thumb, for store cupboard basics it doesn’t really matter about the brand. Always go for the supermarket own brand over their pricier product relatives.

Sharing is caring

As a student it’s likely you’ll be in a house share, use this to your advantage. Purchase food that’s on offer in bulk and split it between your house mates. This means you’ll be able to take advantage of the savings but not have a surplus of food and an empty wallet.

It’s also a good idea to take this further and take turns cooking meals for each other, cooking together can be a great experience and it’ll save you a ton of money to boot. It’s a win-win situation, just remember to do the washing up when you’re not cooking!

Clear up the clearance section

If you live near to a supermarket this is a great little tip to make the most of reduced price food. It involves figuring out the best time to visit wherein the clearance section will have the most items in.

Traditionally this is always around half an hour before they shut, it might seem a bit awkward to skulk around waiting for staff to reduce items, but it’s well worth doing so. If items are reduced drastically and are freezable be sure to swoop them up for future meals.

Asda, Aldi & Lidl

These are going to be the biggest weapons in your frugal food shopping arsenal, 99% of the time they will be cheaper than other shops. Even if it’s a 30 minute walk away it’ll be worth it (or bribe a friend that drives with the promise of a free dinner)

Local Markets / Green Grocers – Tip from Louise over at Poppy and the bees

Your local greengrocer/market is your friend! In season fresh produce is way cheaper than super market packaged stuff and can often be frozen if you find a huge bargain.
Also: Shop at the end of the day when they’re packing up and you’ll get even more for your money!

Buy In Bulk / No waste, No Worries – Tip from Josh at Student Eats

Buy in bulk! Get cupboard staples that’ll last for a while (e.g pasta, tins) in big quantities f you can as it’ll be a lot cheaper. Split this with a housemate and you’re on to even more savings!

Also, don’t chuck off food away! Search online for recipes, e.g. stale bread can be made into bread and butter pudding and overripe bananas into all sorts (cakes, pancakes, etc).

So there you have it folks, my tips on saving money whilst student food shopping – be sure to comment any tips you have below!

Pairing food with wine can be an absolute nightmare, particularly if you’re a student. I remember inviting a couple of friends round for a curry in second year and providing them a bottle of off license red to accompany the meal. Safe to say it wasn’t a meal to remember, luckily the lovely folks at Roberson Wine have created an info-graphic that recommends which wines pair play well with certain cuisine types. I’d advise printing out this info-graphic and sticking it to your fridge so you never make a wine pairing mistake again.

Luckily my house mate works in a wine bar in Brighton so I can pick up good bottles of wine for cheap (Thank you staff discount…)

Do you have any tips for drinking well on the cheap?

By day Rock Ola is a cafe in the North Laines of Brighton, but on Friday evenings it becomes something altogether different.

Being a student I rarely get to eat out. Earlier this month a couple of friends and I had just been paid and fancied a break from cooking. We were thrashing out options of where to go when someone suggested “Rock Ola”

Naturally everyone stopped in their tracks and wondered what a ‘Rock Ola‘ is. We were enlightened when they explained that it was a b.y.o.b burger joint (£1 corkage) Quickly we booked a table over Facebook and made a beeline to Aldi to grab a few knock off lagers.

When we arrived we were impressed by the décor, it resembled an American diner and created a really fun atmosphere… It even had a free to play jukebox!

After numerous Pulp Fiction references we looked at the menu. There was a lot of choice, it wasn’t JUST burgers, but did specialise in them. The monstrous Elvis burger ( Which weighs in at over a kilo) caught my eye, although I was dissuaded by a couple of friends since it wouldn’t of been the best foundation to start a night out on.

Since it was 8 of us, it took a while for us to order. As soon as I saw a ‘fiery Mexican cheese and guacamole’ burger on the menu my mind was made up. The burgers also came with fries, which was refreshing to hear as we didn’t want any surprises when it came to pay.The waitress was great and attentive, she brought over glasses for our beers and gave some recommendations on what to order.

The food came out really quickly. I was very pleased with my burger, as pictured:

The guacamole was nice and chunky, due to how busy the restaurant we were given a basket of chips to share between two – this was fine with me, the volume of the food was just right (I wouldn’t of wanted a portion of chips to my self)

The beef burger was excellent and the fiery cheese was soothed by the guacamole. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the coleslaw, as it wasn’t crunchy – but apart from that it was completely spot on.

I really enjoyed my meal – after the plates were cleared there was no rushing from staff (Which you’d conventionally get on a Friday night) and we were able to finish the beers we’d bought in before departing.

The Verdict

Overall the food was delicious, the service was on point and the inside of the venue provided a great atmosphere. At below a tenner for a burger and fries with corkage it’s not going to break the bank either.

If you’re a student in Brighton I’d recommend on getting down to this little gem before everyone knows about it!

It’s been a bit of a busy start to the year, but an incredibly fruitful one. An article I pitched to the Guardian in October was published to their website!

I thought the article was going to be published just within the student section, but it was published to the front page and was the number one article within the food section (Not bad for a romanticised egg & chips!)

The article questions why people get takeaways when they’re hungover – surely it’d make much more sense both for your health and for your wallet to knock something together in the kitchen. I do understand on the most horrific of hangovers, wherein every step makes your nauseous, that the thought of crawling to the stove wouldn’t be very appealing.

But when it’s the case of going one or two pints over there’s nothing more productive then getting your cook on is essential hangover rehabilitation.

It was a huge surprise to say the least and the influx of traffic was a bit of a surprise! (But a great surprise to wake up to, I thought it was a glitch at first)

Some of the comments on the article aren’t particularly positive or constructive – but y’know, haters gonna hate.

But don’t take it from me, James Franco raises some points on the matter;

But enough blowing my own trumpet, If you’d like to read the article click here

It’s that dreaded time of year again. Between scurrying around for last minute presents and substantial prolonged festive hangovers it can be hard to fit cooking in. This lazy recipe is here to change that.

Gammon is a conventionally Christmas meal, it’s the less attractive but more fun cousin of turkey. A good gammon can be whipped up with minimal effort and easily appease the in-laws on boxing day. This is a super secret recipe that has been handed down through my family for ONE WHOLE GENERATION (From my Dad to me)

If you’ve got a slowcooker this recipe will be an absolute breeze. I used a 2.4kg gammon joint which I got from my local butcher for £6 (To any international readers, this equates to an absolute steal) If you don’t have a slowcooker don’t fret. You can just use a sauce pan and it turns out equally as well.

I soaked my gammon overnight to remove excess salt, if you don’t like your meat too salty I’d recommending doing this as well.

As pointed out by Andrew within the comments you can also slow-cook in stock or beer.

Coke Gammon Ingredients

Gammon Joint

Coca Cola (Enough to submerge the joint, it took a litre to cover mine)

Glaze Ingredients

2 tbsp Honey

1 tbsp Wholegrain Mustard

Left over gammon/coke juices

1) Coke, meet gammon you’re going to be spending a lot of time with each other.

	2) Submerge your gammon in the coca cola, I used slowcooker on high for 8 hours. If using a sauce pan, bring to the boil and then simmer for 2 – 3 hours. I removed the skin after it had spent the necessary time in the slow cooker

3) Once either steps have been completed above, you should remove the gammon from the pan and leave to cool. At this stage I also removed the skin. Dispose of most of the coke but keep a little to add some liquid to the glaze. Pre-heat your oven to 180c at this point

4) Once cooled, score the fat that’s left over and put the joint in a baking tray. Mix your glaze with the ingredients listed above (and a little bit of leftover cooking coke)

5) Once the ham is coated , put it into the oven for 20 mins. Take out at this moment and spoon excess glaze over. If the glaze isn’t caramelizing turn up the heat and keep an eye on it!

At the start of this month I had the pleasure of visiting the Red Snapper by seven dials to celebrate a friends 22nd birthday.

Thai food in Brighton doesn’t seem to have the fervent following that other cuisines seem to have, if asked for a recommendation for a Thai restaurant most people will shrug their shoulders. After bothering a large amount of people I was pointed in the direction of The Red Snapper.

We made a booking for 15 of us on a Saturday night, looking to take advantage of the reasonably priced food and corkage prior to a night on the town. It was a great evening and the staff didn’t mind that we were quite rowdy.

The restaurant itself is quite intimate -but they still managed to fit all 15 of us in comfortably. When we arrived the table was laden with Thai-style prawn crackers that we all wolfed down eagerly. Due to the size of our booking it had been agreed prior that we would share several mixed starter platters between us.

The starter was great! Particularly the dumplings. Although the prawn toast, chicken satay sticks and spring rolls were equally delicious when dipped in the sauces provided (Which were satay and sweet chilli)

The salad was also a great touch – it made us all feel a bit better about the amount of indulgent starters we’d consumed.

Following on from the starter I ordered a Thai-Green chicken curry that was also very tasty, all of the curry pastes used are made from scratch and you can definitely tell. It was incredibly more-ish and went excellently with the coconut rice.

I did experience severe food envy after trying one of my friends dishes (It was a crispy red snapper dish with sweet chilli accompaniment and it was out of this world)

We had a fantastic meal – the service was attentive and the food came out swiftly. My only gripe would be the cold plates we were served our mains on. But I can totally understand that it’d be very difficult to heat 15 plates during the peak hours that we visited.

The food came to around £15 per person, which I thought was well priced for the quality of the dishes. Since it was B.Y.O this made for a very cheap dining experience.

The Verdict

I’d definitely recommend the Red Snapper to my friends, I have since been back and tried it’s namesake dish (Crispy red snapper fillet) and would advise getting that over the curries available.

If you’re hankering for Thai food and are in the Brighton area it’s safe to say that this is the place to go!
