This doesn’t seem to be the case (excuse the pun) for Flavourly, whose craft beer delivery box received and turned down  4 offers on Dragons Den! 

Since then they’ve gone from strength to strength and I was given the opportunity to try one of their boxes this weekend. In my spare time I like to brew beer kits – I’m not a novice to beer but I’m certainly not a pro either.

The first thing that will strike you when opening the Flavourly box is the sheer quality of everything involved, the design on the exterior of the box is tasteful yet playful and is similar to the style of design on most craft beer labels. 

Upon opening the material within the box was very informative, describing the subtleties of each beer. But the spotlight isn’t just on the beer, it also describes the brewer and where it was brewed. I was given a mixed beer box, so I had a delicious mix between light and dark beers. 

Here’s what the full contents of the box looked like. It’s a huge amount of things for £20! (Even less if you sign up on a long term monthly package and use the Flavourly voucher code at the bottom of this page) The level of detail to this delivery box would make it perfect for a craft beer veteran or someone just getting into it. 

The addition of a glass and bottle opener were great! They really took the box to the next level for me and I expect both to get a great deal of use over the summer. 

What goes with craft beer? Craft snacks. Flavourly truly have thought of everything within this box, the snacks included with the box were interesting and not the usual packet of peanuts you’d find with a pint of Carling. 

What I loved about it 

The attention to detail was amazing and the sheer volume of information regarding the beer was spot on. I also developed a real soft spot for one of the beers within the box. The tickety brew rose wheat beer above is brewed in Manchester and definitely one to try if you want to try something a bit different.  

It also cuts out the guesswork of figuring out which type of craft beers you like, so no more supping on experimental pints in pubs and hating what you’ve bought. For me it firmly concreted that I favour light beers. 

The delivery time was also excellent, it was sent out on Wednesday and arrived on Friday of the same week. Just in time for a barbecue on the Saturday! 

What I didn’t like

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t dig the snacks. I’m not much of a fan of cheddar crisps in general  and the nut kernels were a little bit weird. But these are subjective opinions based on taste and the snacks won’t stay the same with each box. 

Would I buy this box?

Being a student I rarely get to eat out. Earlier this month  a couple of friends and I had just been paid and fancied a break from cooking. We were thrashing out options of where to go when someone suggested “Rock Ola” 

Naturally everyone stopped in their tracks and wondered what a ‘Rock Ola‘ is. We were enlightened when they explained that it was a b.y.o.b burger joint (£1 corkage) Quickly we booked a table over Facebook and made a beeline to Aldi to grab a few knock off lagers. 

When we arrived we were impressed by the décor, it resembled an American diner and created a really fun atmosphere… It even had a free to play jukebox!

After numerous Pulp Fiction references we looked at the menu. There was a lot of choice, it wasn’t JUST burgers, but did specialise in them. The monstrous Elvis burger ( Which weighs in at over a kilo) caught my eye, although I was dissuaded by a couple of friends since it wouldn’t of been the best foundation to start a night out on. 

Since it was 8 of us, it took a while for us to order. As soon as I saw a ‘fiery Mexican cheese and guacamole’ burger on the menu my mind was made up. The burgers also came with fries, which was refreshing to hear as we didn’t want any surprises when it came to pay.The waitress was great and attentive, she brought over glasses for our beers and gave some recommendations on what to order. 

The food came out really quickly. I was very pleased with my burger, as pictured: 

The guacamole was nice and chunky, due to how busy the restaurant we were given a basket of chips to share between two – this was fine with me, the volume of the food was just right (I wouldn’t of wanted a portion of chips to my self)

The beef burger was excellent and the fiery cheese was soothed by the guacamole. I wasn’t particularly impressed by the coleslaw, as it wasn’t crunchy – but apart from that it was completely spot on.  

I really enjoyed my meal – after the plates were cleared there was no rushing from staff (Which you’d conventionally get on a Friday night) and we were able to finish the beers we’d bought in before departing. 

The Verdict 

Overall the food was delicious, the service was on point and the inside of the venue provided a great atmosphere. At below a tenner for a burger and fries with corkage it’s not going to break the bank either.

If you’re a student in Brighton I’d recommend on getting down to this little gem before everyone knows about it!

Thai food in Brighton doesn’t seem to have the fervent following that other cuisines seem to have, if asked for  a recommendation for a Thai restaurant most people will shrug their shoulders. After bothering a large amount of people I was pointed in the direction of The Red Snapper. 

We made a booking for 15 of us on a Saturday night, looking to take advantage of the reasonably priced food and corkage prior to a night on the town. It was a great evening and the staff didn’t mind that we were quite rowdy.

The restaurant itself is quite intimate -but they still managed to fit all 15 of us in comfortably. When we arrived the table was laden with Thai-style prawn crackers that we all wolfed down eagerly. Due to the size of our booking it had been agreed prior that we would share several mixed starter platters between us.

The starter was great! Particularly the dumplings. Although the prawn toast, chicken satay sticks and spring rolls were equally delicious when dipped in the sauces provided (Which were satay and sweet chilli)

The salad was also a great touch – it made us all feel a bit better about the amount of indulgent starters we’d consumed.

 Following on from the starter I ordered a Thai-Green chicken curry that was also very tasty, all of the curry pastes used are made from scratch and you can definitely tell. It was incredibly more-ish and went excellently with the coconut rice.

I did experience severe food envy after trying one of my friends dishes (It was a crispy red snapper dish with sweet chilli accompaniment and it was out of this world) 

We had a fantastic meal – the service was attentive and the food came out swiftly. My only gripe would be the cold plates we were served our mains on. But I can totally understand that it’d be very difficult to heat 15 plates during the peak hours that we visited. 

The food came to around £15 per person, which I thought was well priced for the quality of the dishes. Since it was B.Y.O this made for a very cheap dining experience.

The Verdict

I’d definitely recommend the Red Snapper to my friends, I have since been back  and tried it’s namesake dish (Crispy red snapper fillet) and would advise getting that over the curries available.  

If you’re hankering for Thai food and are in the Brighton area it’s safe to say that this is the place to go!

I remember the first time my parents dropped me off for my first year of  university, due to the accommodation crisis at my university I was relegated to a private house outside of town with 4 other people I’d met over the internet.  Surprisingly this wasn’t the most ideal of situations. 

Immediately I struck it off with one of my housemates and began talking about a common fear – cooking! She got this book out of one of her moving boxes and we began pouring over the recipes within the book and thrashed out what we were going to cook for our first communal dinner. This anecdote inspired me to write a nosh for students cookbook review.

Positives

Despite cooking a reasonable amount prior to university I was still intimidated by certain varieties of cooking, particularly cooking exotic food. generally I just stuck to the bog standard sausage / mash and potato wedge recipes I was comfortable with.  This cookbook really helped me to develop my basic cooking skills and built up a wide repertoire of recipes. 

Furthermore, an aspect I love about this book is the way recipes are measured. Joy May completely understands that the student kitchen is likely to be poorly equipped (I didn’t get a set of scales until third year) The measurements within recipes are given in spoons & mugs! Absolutely perfect for the aspiring student chef and proof that you don’t need a well equipped kitchen to begin cooking. 

For those of you that are on the budget, the recipes are broken down into total pricing and then pricing per serving. This is perfect for working how much you are owed (In wine or money!) when cooking a large meal for friends or when money is tight and you need to budget.  

Negatives

The only negative within this book is that if you’re of an intermediate level you may outgrow it quickly, but if you’re a beginner there’s enough content for you to cook a wide variety of recipes for the first two years of university. I’ll admit it, if i’m stuck for something to cook I’ll leaf through this book and look for something I like the sound of and then adapt the recipe.
